There is a certain pride that comes with living or growing up in Charleston. Often, it manifests itself in quirky ways, like specific city knowledge, trends, and colloquialisms. Think: What is proper etiquette when walking down King Street? We’ll get into that.
If you happen to be lucky enough to be from the Holy City, here are a few unwritten rules you may know to be true submitted by readers on Instagram + through email — and if you’re not from Charleston, you might want to save this article for future reference.

Civic
- Charleston County School District has unveiled proposed changes to its quadrant of the Hampstead Mall — the oldest public green space located in the East Side. The plans include a multi-use athletic field for Early College High School students during the day + open to the public at night and over the weekend. (WCSC)
Real Estate
- WRS Real Estate Investments — a Mt. Pleasant real estate firm — recently purchased seven buildings for $13.3 million. The properties are located off of US Hwy. 78 near Summerville, total 91,000 sqft. of space, and are currently 100% leased. (The Post and Courier)
Number
- $3.5 million. That's how much Charleston-based legal tech startup Case Status — led by serial entrepreneur Andy Seavers — has raised in venture funding. The funds will be used to continue expansion across the US + Canada and add new hires locally.
Development
- Today, the Kiawah Island Community Association will begin nightly construction at the intersection of Green Dolphin Way between the Sanctuary + the Vanderhorst Gate to raise 450 feet of the Island Parkway. Brief delays can be expected over the next two weeks.
Community
- Looking for ways to go green in the new year? Starting Jan. 23, City of Charleston residents can recycle food scraps for free at designated drop sites with the new composting pilot program. Organic materials will be sent to the Bees Ferry Compost Facility instead of the landfill — helping the city save up to 15,000 tons of collected waste. Sign up.
Biz
- Hampden Clothing has added another Lowcountry location at 747 Meeting St. in the NoMo neighborhood. The internationally recognized boutique plans to use the 7,200 sqft space as an e-commerce + distribution retail office.
Eat
