What does a $20 million redevelopment project look like? This. ⬇️ |
|
|
The City of North Charleston officially broke ground on a $20 million redevelopment project in Park Circle yesterday. The Park Circle Reimagined project — redeveloping the entirety of the inner circle — is part of a $45 million spend working to improve recreational areas in the North Charleston neighborhood.
|
|
|
What to expect - A new cultural arts and recreation facility, featuring meeting rooms + a theater
- A 55,000-sqft accessible playground
- Walking trails
- An inclusive baseball field
- A nature garden + open green space
- Enhanced arts exposure
-
Designated farmers’ market structure with areas for vendors + food trucks
Community enhancement
The project’s 55,000-sqft accessible playground is set to be one of the largest on the east coast, taking into account safety considerations including ramps to ensure children of all abilities have access to the playground. The playground will also serve as a testing site for future projects.
The city opened its first inclusive playground in the Oak Terrace Preserve neighborhood back in April.
Former community offerings included a community center, which has since been demolished, a butterfly garden, a green space + a baseball field. These amenities were deemed outdated and unequipped to serve the current needs of the community, which Park Circle Reimagined is working to reform.
Project timeline The goal is to welcome residents to the redeveloped area by the fall of 2023, and the project is expected to take anywhere from 12 to 16 months.

Editor's pick: We’re all looking for ways to spread a little joy in our community, right?
Reader Tina A. recently reached out to share the scoop on BeKindCharleston.org — a local initiative that works to practice acts of kindness in the Lowcountry, beginning with handmade cards. Cards are created with uplifting messages and then distributed to others in the community.
Tina shared that there has been one group event so far to make cards, and they took some of the cards to a nursing home when visiting a friend to slip them under random doors. If you see me crying in the club, you know why. Check out how to get involved. 💌 Missed yesterday's newsletter? Read up on the Charleston Carifest here. |
