HISTORY

This month in Charleston history...

In case you didn’t know, this month marks the 136th anniversary of the Earthquake of 1886.

The catastrophic earthquake reached our city around 9:50 p.m. on August 31, ringing in at an estimated magnitude of 6.9-7.3 and marking it as the largest recorded earthquake in the history of the southeastern United States.

Throughout the month of August, Historic Charleston Foundation plans to feature various buildings throughout town and the damage that they experienced during the earthquake through the lens of photographer George LaGrange Cook. Here’s a glimpse of 114 Broad St. aka the Colonel Thomas Pinckney House.

• A new restaurant is in the works. The owners of D’Allesandro’s Pizza have begun construction on a small restaurant + bar near the Crosstown: Novavon. While further details haven’t been released, we’ll keep you updated on the progress of the spot at 638 King St. 🍴 (The Post and Courier)

• The Sewee Longleaf Conservation Cooperative is hosting a free, virtual workshop on August 8 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The webinar allows forest landowners in Berkeley, Charleston, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties the opportunity to speak to natural resource professionals from local organizations. • The expansion of a master-planned community is in progress along Clements Ferry Road. Yesterday, Charleston’s Technical Review Committee was set to review the pre-application submitted by the Point Hope Community — featuring plans for restaurant + retail space, hundreds of multi-family units, and townhomes. 🚧 (WCSC)

• Local build-your-own salad eatery Verde may be expanding. Owner Jennifer Ferrebee says Summerville, North Charleston, and other Columbia neighborhoods are on her radar for potential locations in the near future. In the meantime, head to the Mt. Pleasant or West Ashley locations for Lexa’s favorite meal: The Mesa Verde with shrimp. 🥗 (The Post and Courier)

• Heads up, sports fans: Tickets are now available for Charleston County School District’s inaugural Football Jamboree, scheduled for August 12 at Robert. E. Hayes Field. Editor's pick: I've lived here (almost) all my life and I just don't think that a RiverDogs game will ever get old.

Whether it's the deals, the crowds, or the sunsets, there's just something special about watching the team play at The Joe. That's how I spent my Friday night last week + I couldn't have asked for a better evening.

The RiverDogs are away this weekend, but I came across these gorgeous photos of the stadium which will have to hold me over until the team returns next Tuesday. Check the schedule + grab tickets.
