The North Bridge connecting North Charleston to West Ashley has no sidewalks or bike lanes. Charleston County started the Better North Bridge project to address safety concerns.
The project is Charleston County’s plan for a safe + equitable passage for walkers and bikers over the Ashley River. The project is currently in its study phase and involves possibly building a standalone bike and pedestrian bridge alongside North Bridge.
Transportation advocacy group Charleston Moves recently held a “Better North Bridge Ride” in support of the project. The event had a significant turnout, with 250+ cyclists riding over North Bridge, filling out surveys, and providing testimonials.
There will be a public meeting soon to gather feedback from the community. No date has been announced yet, but you can visit the project website for updates. Next year, the county expects to develop conceptual plans, determine the cost estimate, and seek grants by July 2022.
