Hello Thursday.
April 25 2024
An 87-acre park is coming soon to the Lowcountry. Ashley River Park is currently being built on the banks of the Ashley River by the historic Bacons Bridge in Dorchester County. The park — located by Summerville — is set to open by the end of this year.

What’s in the park?
- Interactive play fountain designed to look like a map of Ashley River
- 2 dog parks
- Open lawn areas
- Playground and picnic areas
- Event space with a pavilion
- Tiered lawn by a large pond with fishing piers and boardwalks
- Upgraded nearby kayak launch and picnic area
Designs for the park first began in 2015. Local land design firm SeamonWhiteside recently announced its partnership in developing the project + has focused on preserving wetlands on the grounds. The firm said its biggest goal was to make the park with the community in mind and have it become a special part of Dorchester County.

Ranked
- Charleston was recently named on Conde Nast’s “32 Most Haunted Places in America.” The list features Dock Street Theatre, one of the oldest theaters in the country. The spot is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Nettie Dickerson, who was struck by lightning on the balcony of the Planters Inn — a hotel that once stood where the theater is now. (Conde Nast Traveler)
Now Open
- New Mexican eatery Maya has opened downtown at 479 King St. serving up both traditional + modern dishes. What’s on the menu? We’re fired up to order the duck carnitas tacos and quesadillas with chipotle shrimp, just to name a few. 🌮 (The Post and Courier)
Number
- $1.5 million. The approximate cost of a new fire boat for St. Johns Fire District, which serves Kiawah Island, Wadmalaw Island, Johns Island, and Seabrook Island. The department has asked the county to replace its current boat, which is over a decade old. The replacement would be faster + have better navigation. (WCSC)
Seasonal
- Be the mummy of the year + bring your family to the Knightsville United Methodist Church’s annual pumpkin patch, open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. Starting Oct. 16, visitors can also play in jump castles, hop on hayrides, and dig into a BBQ dinner. Check out 7 more pumpkin patches in Charleston. 🎃 (WCIV)
Traffic
- Charleston County is considering a “no-thru truck” ordinance for Berryhill Road and Walter Drive near Maybank Highway on Johns Island. The measure would restrict large trucks from driving on these roads. 🚚 (WCSC)

Artists can enter to win a $500 purchase award and a solo exhibition at Park Circle Gallery and the winning art will become the official poster design of the festival. Enter for free.
- We know your mind’s on Halloween, but there’s something you should snow about. An upcoming exhibition called “A Winter Wonderland in Color: Snow Scenes of Charleston” will open Nov. 1. The exhibit will feature colorized vintage photographs of winter weather in the Holy City. ❄️ (Holy City Sinner)
